About Edna Thayer
Edna L. Thayer, aka (or affectionately known as) The Laughing Lady, began her interest in the serious side of humor in early 1990 when she developed a staff development class entitled, “Stress Relief Through Humor.” The popularity of the topic grew by word of mouth and soon Edna was branching out and being asked to present at other groups to which the attendees belonged. Thus began Humor THAYER-apy, a term Edna uses to describe her business. In 23 years, she has given over 875 talks in 18 different states and Canada, varying from 20 minutes to all day workshops. Demonstrating the universality of the topic, the participants included a wide variety of people including health care providers, educators, businesses, day care providers, church groups, government organizations, philanthropic organizations, senior citizen groups and clients. As part of her talks, Edna leads a laughing exercise with the audience, giving her the nickname of “The Laughing Lady.” Edna’s favorite topic to present now is based on Mary’s and her book, A Mirthful Spirit, Embracing Laughter for Wellness.
Edna is a registered nurse with over 40 years experience in nursing prior to her retirement in October, 1996. Besides her education at Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, MN to receive her R.N., Edna has a B.S. degree in Nursing Education from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in nursing from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and a master’s degree in counseling from Mankato State University (MSU) in Minnesota. In October 2007 she was certified as a laughter leader through the World Laughter Tour (CLL).
Edna has worked as an Associate Professor in Nursing at MSU, where she first was a colleague of Mary Huntley, Assistant Administrator of Rice County District One Hospital in Faribault, MN, and a nurse administrative supervisor at St. Peter Regional Treatment Center in MN. Her mirthful spirit has been a valuable asset in each of these positions.
A mirthful spirit and laughter are to people---
What sunshine and water are to plants.
